For Art History Students

IHUM 243 introduces the Art History student to the visual arts in Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic cultures in South Asia. For example, the spread of Buddhism was enhanced greatly by the painting, sculpture and architecture of Buddhism, all of which also profoundly influenced the visual art and architecture of Hinduism. The Islamic arts of the Mughal Dynasty also inspired some of the most spectacular paintings and architectural masterpieces the world has ever known, yet these art forms were subject to considerable restrictions. What has been the role of religion in the development of the visual arts in South Asia? Why do some religions encourage and depend on visual art while others try to restrict visual imagery?
