For STEM Students

IHUM 243 introduces the importance of mathematics in ancient Hindu thought and the role of mathematicians, particularly during the Gupta period and in the present day. Significantly, the story of Srinivasa Ramanujan, documented and celebrated in the film The Man Who Knew Infinity, is a story about the genius of this scholar as well as the cultural clashes that resulted from his Hindu culture and his participation as a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in the early 20th century. How can a study of South Asia help a modern STEM student understand and appreciate the contributions of South Asian scholars, like Ramanujan, in modern Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, and Computer Science research?
